Mandi Overview
Mandi is sometimes called 'Kashi of the Himalaya' or 'Choti Kashi' on account of its numerous temples. Built on the banks of the river Beas, the town of has over a hundred large, small and tiny temples. In 1827, Raja Ajbar Sen founded this town and shifted his capital from the old seat at Bhuili. At Mandi, he built a palace with four towers which was named the Chauki - of which nothing really remains.
WhileAjbarSen's wife, Sultan Devi builtthefamousTrilokinath temple, the Raja himself built the Bhootnath one. Apart from these two temples, executed in fine classical forms, the Tarna temple, the Ardhnarishwara and the Panchvaktra are some of Mandi's important shrines; these are considered to be amongst the finest in India. Other significant shrines are the Shyamakali and Madho (Madhav) Rai temples. The place-name, 'Mandi' may have come from the common word for marketplace, as the town was major market and was on the old trade routes. The name may also have come from Mandav, after the sage of this name who is believed to have meditated in the area.
